Youth Programs

There are numerous State and National programs to involve the boys and girls in our community.  Following is a brief outline, as the programs are scheduled follow the individual links.

Child ID Kits

During the fraternal year 2003-2004, the New Jersey State Council introduced the Child ID Kit program. Pursuant to this program, a Council, Assembly, Federation, Chapter, or Insurance Agency may order, at no charge, Child ID Kits from National Child ID Kits in Franklin Square, New York. An order form is contained in this section of the Grand Knight’s Manual, along with a sample logo, which may be placed on the front of the kits. The advertisers whose ads will appear on the back of the kits pay all costs.These kits provide vital information on a child that can be given to police, prosecutors, FBI, Sheriff’s Offices and other law enforcement personnel in the event a child is kidnapped or is missing. The New Jersey State Council encourages all Councils to participate in this program.

Spelling Bee

Open to all eighth grade students, this program begins on the Council level in January and concludes with the State Contest, which will be held at Council 8160 in Brick. Contact the Council near you for the date of the Council's round.

Keep Christ Before Us Coloring Books

The New Jersey State Council is once again offering coloring books with the theme "Keep Christ in Christmas". To order contact Mike Monterosa, FDD.

Bishop Dougherty Scholarship

The Bishop Dougherty Scholarship Fund provides up to four (4) $ 1000.00 scholarships for children, siblings or grandchildren of our Fraternal Brothers. The applicants must be entering their freshman year in college.

Applicants should obtain a copy of the application from the Grand Knight. Completed application should be returned to the Grand Knight of the sponsoring council by March 1, 2011.The Grand Knight will forward the completed application to the State Chairman no later than April 1, 2011.

John Attardo Scholarship

This scholarship is in memory of John Attardo, a Counselor, State Chairman and friend who devoted his life to the Columbian Squires.

Scholarship is for Squires who will be attending college in the Fall, deadline for submission is April 1. The form can be found in the Grand Knights Manual

Father John F. Murray Scholarship

The Father John F. Murray Scholarship Fund has been established to provide scholarships to Catholic students that are members in good standing of the Columbian Squires. The applicants must be entering their freshman year in a Catholic high school, and have maintained a “B” or 3.0 averages in the 7th and 8th Grades. Applicants should obtain a copy of the application from the Grand Knight. Completed applications should be returned to the Grand Knight of the sponsoring council by March1. The Grand Knight will forward the completed application to the State Chairman no later than April 1.

ALL APPLICATIONS MUST HAVE A COPY OF THE SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT ATTACHED OR THEY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

Substance Abuse Poster Contest

This program should be started in the fall so that the Council winner can be selected by January 31.  State winner is selected on March 31st and forwarded to Supreme for entry in the nationwide contest.

The contest’s goal is to encourage the creation of thought-provoking slogans and visuals by young people for their peers to promote awareness of the dangers of substance abuse. 

Posters must be turned in to the state chairman by March 1st, no later.

Scouting Awards

The leaders of tomorrow often have their roots as the Eagle Scouts (boys) or the Gold Award (girls) acheivers of today.  The State Council and Supreme Council will forward certificates to be presented at the honor ceremonies.

Essay Contest

This is one of the earliest programs each fraternal year.  Contest should be started at the beginning of the school year and Council winners should be decided by October 30th. Council winning Entries should be forwarded to the District Deputy for the second round. The District winners are forwarded to the for the State Award.
